National Conferences and AGM

Independent Living Canada's Annual General Meeting and Conference is a time to reconnect with the people, experiences and shared purpose that give our national network its strength. Alongside the essential business of the AGM, we make room to reflect on what we have accomplished, speak openly about challenges, and help shape the work ahead. Each gathering reminds us that our movement grows through the everyday contributions of people who believe in choice, dignity, peer support and the right to direct their own lives.

The conference brings those connections to life. Through conversations, presentations and shared experiences, we learn from one another, celebrate progress and work through questions that matter to our communities. There is something powerful about coming together - to hear a familiar story from a new perspective, find encouragement in someone else's experience, or leave knowing that others share both our challenges and our determination. Since the pandemic, a hybrid format has also offered a virtual participation option, helping more people across the network contribute to these conversations.

Each year's theme reflects the priorities and evolving conversations within the Independent Living movement. Our AGM and Conference Planning Committee works closely with our National Executive Director and Board to create programming that connects these ideas to the lived experiences and work of our Member Centres. The contributions of participants make each gathering meaningful, bringing knowledge, honesty and imagination to our shared discussions.

Over the years, communities and Member Centres across Canada have welcomed this gathering, contributing their own perspectives and hospitality. More recently, Ottawa has provided a practical setting, with access to federal decision-makers, accessible venues and travel connections that support participation from across the country.

The lasting value of our AGM and Conference is carried home in renewed relationships, shared ideas and a stronger sense of belonging. We leave with a deeper appreciation for one another and fresh resolve to advance Independent Living in our communities. Together, we carry that spirit forward - building on the work of those who came before us and creating more opportunities for people with disabilities to live the lives they choose.
