IL Canada Statement on ILNS Departure from IL Canada Network

MEDIA RELEASE

Statement from Independent Living (IL) Canada on Independent Living Nova Scotia's Departure from the IL Network of Member Centres

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 22, 2026

Independent Living Canada (IL Canada) acknowledges the recent decision by Independent Living Nova Scotia (ILNS) to withdraw from IL Canada.

While we respect the right of every organization to determine its own direction, we believe it is important to recognize that differing perspectives can emerge within complex discussions related to governance, accommodation, participation, and organizational processes. The views expressed by ILNS reflect one perspective on these matters and do not represent IL Canada's ongoing commitment to accessibility, inclusion, accommodation, or human rights.

IL Canada remains firmly committed to the principles of the Independent Living movement, including meaningful participation, self-determination, accessibility, peer leadership, and respectful collaboration. These values continue to guide our governance, operations, and relationships with member centres and community partners across the country.

Over several years, IL Canada engaged in ongoing discussions and efforts related to accommodation and participation in governance activities. These efforts included dialogue, adaptations, procedural considerations, and attempts to identify workable solutions within the realities of a national organization operating across diverse regions, capacities, and perspectives. While it is unfortunate that all parties were ultimately unable to reach a shared path forward, disagreement regarding accommodation approaches does not, in itself, indicate a lack of commitment to inclusion or accessibility.

IL Canada remains firmly committed to fostering a culture where accessibility, inclusion, and the voices of persons with disabilities are respected, prioritized, and meaningfully addressed across our organization. We remain committed to continued competence, respectful dialogue, and strengthening inclusive practices in ways that uphold and advance the Independent Living philosophy.

For nearly four decades, IL Canada and its member centres have worked collectively to advance disability rights, accessibility, peer support, inclusion, and community participation across Canada. We remain proud of that shared history and deeply appreciative of the many individuals and organizations — including ILNS — that have contributed to the growth and impact of the Independent Living movement over the years.

As we move forward, IL Canada remains committed to supporting inclusive communities, strengthening collaboration across the disability sector, and continuing the important work of advancing the rights, dignity, and self-determination of persons with disabilities throughout Canada.
